If you get this engine error after startup, you either mounted a game you don't own or a game that isn't fully installed/ updated.

To fix this, check the number you get after "MountFilesystem" on this site to see what game the appid belongs to, e.g. "MountFilesystem( 242 ) failed" would be "Counter-Strike: Source Shared Content" and thus belongs to the game Counter-Strike: Source.

If you own the game, make sure its fully installed and updated, easiest way would be to just launch the game once.
If you still get the error, right-click on the game in Steam, go to Properties, Local Files and "Verify integrity of game cache".

In case you mounted a game you do not own, go to your "steamapps\SourceMods\obsidian\mounts" folder and delete the files of the game(s) you don't own.

Gameplay
In this gamemode you have to build up a farm by growing plants and selling the fruits. At first you have to clean up the field and then buy seeds by collecting mushrooms in the forest and selling them in the city. A day/night cycle will kill any players that are caught outside the spa, hotel or farmhouse, there is also a cylce of light, rainy and rainbow days. In Rain days you dont have to drain water the first time, it is already done. In Rainbow days theres a posibility of founding a Golden pat in the forest.
Freezing nights kill all your tomatoes and oranges plants

The map consists of 3 main areas and a dirt road conecting them. The areas are:

*The Farm: This area contains the farmhouse,wich is a place to sleep at night, cook and store seeds; the pantry, in wich mushrooms, fruit and eggs can be kept; the barn, wich houses bullsquids, a container for bullsquid feed and a chute for selling their eggs; the field, where seeds can be planted and watered with buckets; 2 ponds which can be used to get water in buckets. The sun obelisk can be won in the casino, makes the freezing days stop, making it perfect to plant tomatos and oranges
Note: the farm can be occasionally invaded by antlions that destroy plants and harm players. The number of antlions grows with each farm upgrade.

*The forest: Mushrooms grow in this area. It often contains one or more antlions. At the furthest corner of the Forrest, a spa can be found. The spa starts with it's doors closed, but players can purchase membership for 85 points. Inside, players can sleep or heal in the pool. There are also birds in the forest that can be killed and leave a chiken stick

*The Town: A small town with 7 main buildings, a town square and a few un-enter able houses. The buildings are (from first building on the right): The contractors (from where farm upgrades can be bought), the hotel (where players can sleep for 10 points a night), the gardening store (where seeds can be bought), the casino (where players can purchase a round of plinko for 50 points and win weapons, half the spent money back or a sun obelisk that prevents cold weather), the livestock store (where bullsquids and their feed can be bought), the hardware store (where a wide array of useful objects and props can be bought) and the pawnshop (where players can sell mushrooms and gin and also buy weapons to kill birds)

W0rf0x:

__TOC__
This is an article on installing the Source dedicated server and extracting the required content to run Obsidian. By following this tutorial, you will be able to run a dedicated server and play Half-Life 2, Episode 1 and Episode 2 single player maps. If you don't wish to run a server with Episode 1 and 2 content, disregard the content mounting for that.

Installing the Dedicated Server
Install:
http://www.steampowered.com/download/hldsupdatetool.exe

Create a bat file and throw this inside:
hldsupdatetool -command update -game "orangebox" -dir C:\***srcds folder***
And run the bat, with the ***srcds folder*** changed to your srcds directory.
This will download Orangebox content so it sets up your directories.

While your at it, download "Counter-Strike Source" content as well. Just replace the "orangebox" with "Counter-Strike Source" and run the bat again.

You should now have an orangebox folder.
Before you enter this folder right click on the "hl2" and "cstrike" folder which was downloaded by the hldsupdatetool when you downloaded CS:S
and press copy.

Enter the orangebox folder and paste the hl2 folder you copied previously. You will need this for models and such.

Inside the orangebox folder, create two new folders, "ep2" and "episodic"

Extracting Source Game Content
This long campaign starts off with the players having to escape city 17 on foot after their escape train had to stop.

As the map progresses, players will come across a huge combine underground base they have to discover.

This campaign is very fast-paced and follows classic co-op gameplay, which means endless player respawns and supplies. It is still required to cooperate with other players and keep them alive to not lose a tactical position or map progress.

Cooperation is also often required to progress in the map, like solving 2-player puzzles.

Custom Soundscripts and Soundcache

W0rf0x: moved Custom soundscripts and soundcache to Custom Soundscripts and Soundcache

Since 1.3 you can specify which soundscripts and soundscapes to load per map, even your own custom ones (like if you made a custom weapon for your map etc.)

Note: If your map doesn't use any custom soundscripts, then you dont have to do this, the mod will automatically use default soundcache settings if it cant find any specified soundcache settings.

There are 2 ways to do this; an easy and a more complicated way, it is sugested to use the easy way unless you really have a reason to use the complicated way and you know what you are doing (like you're making one huge campaign which shares a huge amount of custom sound entries.)

Setting up custom soundscripts and soundscapes, the easy way
Go to your obsidian/maps/cfg folder and create a new text file called "yourmapname_soundscripts.txt".

Add in all your soundscript entries like in this example:

<pre>
"Weapon_HMG1.Single"
{
"channel"		"CHAN_WEAPON"
"volume"		"0.85"
"soundlevel"		"SNDLVL_GUNFIRE"
"pitch"			"85,95"

"wave"			"^weapons/ar1/ar1_dist1.wav"
}

"Weapon_HMG1.Reload_Rotate"
{
"channel"		"CHAN_ITEM"
"volume"		"0.9"
"soundlevel"	"SNDLVL_NORM"

"wave"			"weapons/hmg1/hmg1_reload_rotate.wav"
}

"Weapon_HMG1.Reload_Push"
{
"channel"		"CHAN_ITEM"
"volume"		"0.9"
"soundlevel"	"SNDLVL_NORM"

"wave"			"weapons/hmg1/hmg1_reload_push.wav"
}</pre>

Save it and you should be good to go. Note that it works the same exact way for custom soundscapes, with the exception of the file name being "yourmapname_soundscapes.txt".

Setting up custom soundscripts, the complicated way
First, go to the obsidian\scripts folder and create a new text file, its the best to name it something like level_sounds_mymapname or weapon_sounds_mymapname.

Then copy all your soundscript entrys into this file and save it.

Next, go to the obsidian\scripts\soundscripts folder and create a text new file called Base_mymapname (note: it doesnt have to be your maps name, it can be anything you want.) and put the name of the custom soundscripts you want to precache into this file and save it, it should look like this:

<pre>SoundCache
{
"precache_file"		"scripts/game_sounds_mymapname.txt"
"precache_file"		"scripts/weapon_sounds_mymapname.txt"
}
</pre>

Now to actually precache the soundscript when you start your map, you have to add this key to your maps mapadd script:

<pre>
"SoundCache"
{
"Base_mymapname"	        "1"
}
</pre>

Note: once you add the "SoundCache" key to your mapaddscript, you have to specify ALL soundscripts the map needs, even the default ones, heres an example of what the script has to look like then:

<pre>"mymapname"
{
"spawnitems"
{
"weapon_smg1" "1"
"item_ammo_smg1" "2"
}
"SoundCache"
{
"Base_BASE"		"1"
"Base_HL2"		"1"
"Base_NPC"		"1"
"Base_mymapname"	"1"
}
}
</pre>
If your map requires any game mounts (like ep2, css or hls,) you might have to add the specific Base_* files for them as well, depending on if you mount it only for the textures/models or if you use any npcs or other stuff that uses soundscripts from those mounted games.
"soundlevel"	"SNDLVL_NORM"

"wave"			"weapons/hmg1/hmg1_reload_rotate.wav"
}

"Weapon_HMG1.Reload_Push"
{

{
"precache_file"		"scripts/game_sounds_mymapname.txt"
"precache_file"		"scripts/weapon_sounds_mymapname.txt"
}
</pre>

Now to actually precache the soundscript when you start your map, you have to add this key to your maps mapadd script:

<pre>
"SoundCache"
{
"Base_mymapname"	        "1"
}
</pre>

Note: once you add the "SoundCache" key to your mapaddscript, you have to specify ALL soundscripts the map needs, even the default ones, heres an example of what the script has to look like then:

<pre>"mymapname"
{
"spawnitems"
{
"weapon_smg1" "1"
"item_ammo_smg1" "2"
}
"SoundCache"
{
"Base_BASE"		"1"
"Base_HL2"		"1"
"Base_NPC"		"1"
"Base_mymapname"	"1"
}
}
</pre>
If your map requires any game mounts (like ep2, css or hls,) you might have to add the specific Base_* files for them as well, depending on if you mount it only for the textures/models or if you use any npcs or other stuff that uses soundscripts from those mounted games.

W0rf0x:

<pre>
"Weapon_HMG1.Single"
{
"channel"		"CHAN_WEAPON"
"volume"		"0.85"
"soundlevel"		"SNDLVL_GUNFIRE"
"pitch"			"85,95"

"wave"			"^weapons/ar1/ar1_dist1.wav"
}

"Weapon_HMG1.Reload_Rotate"
{
"channel"		"CHAN_ITEM"
"volume"		"0.9"
"soundlevel"	"SNDLVL_NORM"

"wave"			"weapons/hmg1/hmg1_reload_rotate.wav"
}

"Weapon_HMG1.Reload_Push"
{
"channel"		"CHAN_ITEM"
"volume"		"0.9"
"soundlevel"	"SNDLVL_NORM"

"wave"			"weapons/hmg1/hmg1_reload_push.wav"
}</pre>

Save it and you should be good to go. Note that it works the same exact way for custom soundscapes, with the exception of the file name being "yourmapname_soundscapes.txt".

Setting up custom soundscripts, the complicated way
First, go to the obsidian\scripts folder and create a new text file, its the best to name it something like level_sounds_mymapname or weapon_sounds_mymapname.

<pre>SoundCache
{
"precache_file"		"scripts/game_sounds_mymapname.txt"
"precache_file"		"scripts/weapon_sounds_mymapname.txt"
}
</pre>

Now to actually precache the soundscript when you start your map, you have to add this key to your maps mapadd script:

<pre>
"SoundCache"
{
"Base_mymapname"	        "1"
}
</pre>

Note: once you add the "SoundCache" key to your mapaddscript, you have to specify ALL soundscripts the map needs, even the default ones, heres an example of what the script has to look like then:

<pre>"mymapname"
{
"spawnitems"
{
"weapon_smg1" "1"
"item_ammo_smg1" "2"
}
"SoundCache"
{
"Base_BASE"		"1"
"Base_HL2"		"1"
"Base_NPC"		"1"
"Base_mymapname"	"1"
}
</pre>

W0rf0x:

Zteer's Mapadd Generator is a great tool for doing this. When you decompile a map and edit and add entities, you save the new vmf and compare it to the decompiled vmf. The program will extract the changes and put them in a mapadd file. Great little program, check it out!

Before we start, let me explain valves script format abit. Brackets like these { } act like code blocks. They tell the engine where to look for information on the category above it.

Example:

We have a Classname keyword you use to search for a specific classname to edit or remove.

Code:
<pre>Classname
{
//Put information here!
}</pre>

As you can see if I want to add comments that the engine will ignore, I use the forward slash twice before typing.

Manual Tutorial

Obsidian mapadd scripts allow you to make changes to current maps and add new entities such as NPCs or physical objects.

Scripts are located in the obsidian\maps\cfg folder.

First off lets add a new npc to a map.

Since you may not have the source to the map you will need to get coordinates for the object you want to place. Please keep in mind that you can decompile a map and get coordinates without having to do any real work in-game. Download VMEX to decompile maps.

To manually get coordinates in-game, move to the location you want your ent to spawn, and type status in the console. To open the console press the tilde key (~). This looks like a good place, on the snow hill.

If the console doesn't come up go into options and under keyboard press advanced...
Turn on Enable Developer Console in this window and close. Back in game the console should come up with the tilde key (~).

Now when you type status in console you will get a window that looks like this.

The area I have boxed in red is what you need, shows your current location in the map.

Now what shall we put here...
A citizen named joe thats red and has an smg weapon.

For entity information open Valve Hammer and create a new map. In this map create an npc_citizen or whatever you want and in its properties type in anything you want.

Now save this map with the new ents to the desktop or a place you can access it. Open the VMF file in notepad.
This is what you should see.

The area I have highlighted is what you need. Now create a new txt document. Name it, [mymap]_modify
Replace [mymap] with the name of your map.

Place this document in the obsidian\maps\cfg folder.
Open and inside it should look like this, based off the information from the VMF file you exported from hammer.

In place of origin fill in the location you got from the console as I have in the screenshot above.
Save this file and load up the map.
And look what we have here, our red citizen ready for action!

Other useful commands in the modify scripts are Modify, Remove, and SpawnItems.

Spawnitems works like this.

Code:
<pre>SpawnItems
{
"weapon_smg1" "1"
"weapon_uzi" "2"
"item_battery" "1"
"item_ammo_smg1" "3"
"weapon_healer" "1"
}</pre>

Any weapons added after SpawnItems will be given to each player as the default spawn items.

Remove works like this.

Code:
<pre>Remove
{
Classname
{
"prop_physics" {}
}

Targetname
{
"lawlfire1" {}
}

Origin
{
"178 446 9" {}
}
}</pre>

Classname will remove all entities under the entity category prop_physics, Targetname will remove all entities with the name lawlfire1 and origin will remove entities with that particular origin.

Modify works like this.

Code:
<pre>Modify
{
Classname
{
"npc_combine_s"
{
"rendermode" "2"
"renderamt" "200"
}
}

Targetname
{
"pet_headcrab"
{
"targetname" "txtcrab"
}
}

Origin
{
"64 -424 14"
{
"angles" "0 0 90"
"rendermode" "2"
"renderamt" "150"
}
}
}</pre>

Same as remove, all entity category npc_combine_s will have those values changed on them. Targetname will change the entity with the name pet_headcrab and Origin will change ents at that origin.

For a good example of how this should all look in the txt files open the map modify files in the obsidian\maps\cfg folder.

Please keep all further questions about this in this thread.

Content mounting is important in Obsidian if you wish to use Episode 1 or Episode 2 content.

There are two ways to accomplish this:

Appending ep1_ / ep2_
You can append ep1_ or ep2_ to the start of your maps bsp name, best to do this by saving from hammer and compiling with that name. Ex. ep1_mymap.bsp or ep2_mymap.bsp.

Adding a new key to your maps modify Script
In your maps modify script:

{
"MountEpisodeTwo"	"1"
}</pre>

You can choose which content to mount, only choose to use one option, not both.

You can also use mymap_mounts.txt instead of mymap_modify.txt for that since you need to make a .res file and send that to the client in order to get the mounting working. (This option was made for those who don't want to let other people see your Script)

In fact, we suggest you to use the mymap_mounts.txt way since it has proven to work flawless, while using the modify script often doesn't mount content on the clients. Something we have to investigate further.

Notes
By mounting episode 2, it automatically mounts episode 1.

General
In Obsidian Conflict, each player has various options for customization along all facets of the game. Whether you like a purple HUD, a Yoda player model, green trip mine, orange laser sight, or a pink flashlight, Obsidian Conflict has got you covered.

HUD Customization
Obsidian Conflict allows you to change the color of your HUD, or Heads Up Display. You can do this by accessing "Mod Options" from the main menu and selecting the "Hud" tab. You can then adjust the sliders which represent the red, green, and blue values for each element of the HUD. The results will be shown in an example box, allowing you to get exactly the display you are looking for.

Custom Flashlight Color
You can also change the color of the light that is emitted by your flashlight. You can access the color sliders by clicking on "Mod Options" from the main menu and selecting the "Custom Color" tab. Once again, you can adjust the red, green, and blue sliders and view the result in the example box to get the desired effect.

Other players' flashlight colors will show on your screen and vice versa. If you experience a slowdown or fps drop when other players turn on their flashlights, you can disable all flashlight beams except your own. Do this by accessing "Mod Options" from the main menu, selecting the "Performance" tab, then unchecking the box that reads "Show flashlight beams from other players".

Custom Weapon Effects
By checking the "Use Custom Colors" flag box under the "Custom Color" tab in the Mod Options menu, any weapon with a special light effect will show in the color you have chosen. Grenade lights/trails, S.L.A.M. lasers, and sniper rifle laser beams are some of the effects that will show in your custom color.

Custom Player Models
Custom player models are fully supported by Obsidian Conflict. However, due to various reasons Obsidian Conflict does not supply them for you. See below for links to community made player model packs.

Your custom player model only shows for another player if they have the same model as you. If they do not, they see you as the default, male_01 or female_01 player model. Although this may seem annoying, many Obsidian players download the latest community player model packs, so most people will see your custom model.

W0rf0x:

Create a bat file and throw this inside:
hldsupdatetool -command update -game "tf" -dir C:\***srcds folder***
And run the bat, with the ***srcds folder*** changed to your srcds directory.
This will download TF2 content so it sets up your directories.

While your at it, download "Counter-Strike Source" content as well. Just replace the "tf" with "Counter-Strike Source" and run the bat again.

You should now have an orangebox folder.
Before you enter this folder right click on the "hl2" folder which was downloaded by the hldsupdatetool when you downloaded CS:S
and press copy.

Enter the orangebox folder and paste the hl2 folder you copied previously. You will need this for models and such.

Inside the orangebox folder, create two new folders, "ep2" and "episodic"

Extracting Source Game Content
Now we will start extracting content from your steam steamapps GCF files.

BASE HALF-LIFE 2:

-source 2007 binaries.gcf-

Extract everything from the "hl2" folder to the hl2 folder in your dedicated servers orangebox folder. Overwriting.

-source 2007 shared materials.gcf-

Extract everything from the "hl2" folder to the hl2 folder in your dedicated servers orangebox folder. Overwriting.

-source 2007 shared models.gcf-

Extract everything from the "hl2" folder to the hl2 folder in your dedicated servers orangebox folder. Overwriting.

-source 2007 shared sounds.gcf-

Extract everything from the "hl2" folder to the hl2 folder in your dedicated servers orangebox folder. Overwriting.

BASE EPISODE 1:

-episode 1 shared.gcf-

Extract everything from the "episodic" folder to the episodic folder in your dedicated servers orangebox folder.

BASE EPISODE 2:

-episodic 2007 shared.gcf-

Extract everything from the "episodic" folder to the episodic folder in your dedicated servers orangebox folder. Overwriting.

-episode two content.gcf-

Extract everything from the "ep2" folder to the ep2 folder in your dedicated servers orangebox folder.

-episode two maps.gcf-

Extract everything from the "ep2" folder to the ep2 folder in your dedicated servers orangebox folder.

-episode two materials.gcf-

Extract everything from the "ep2" folder to the ep2 folder in your dedicated servers orangebox folder.

Installing Obsidian Mod Content
Copy a fresh install of the "Obsidian" folder to your dedicated servers orangebox folder.
For mounting content, add blank files to the "Obsidian\mounts" folder. These files should have no extension.

Names:
css
dod
ep2
episodic
hls
lostcoast

Now you can start the srcds.exe and load the mod.

Half-Life Source
Create a hl1 folder in your dedicated servers orangebox folder.

-half-life source.gcf-

Extract everything from the "hl1" folder to the hl1 folder in your dedicated servers orangebox folder.

W0rf0x: New page: Since 1.3 you can specify which soundscripts to load per map, even your own custom soundscripts (like if you made a custom weapon for your map etc.) Note: If your map doesnt use any ...

Since 1.3 you can specify which soundscripts to load per map, even your own custom soundscripts (like if you made a custom weapon for your map etc.)

Note: If your map doesnt use any custom soundscripts, then you dont have to do this, the mod will automatically use default soundcache settings if it cant find any specified soundcache settings.

How to set up custom soundscripts and how to precache them
First, go to the obsidian\scripts folder and create a new text file, its the best to name it something like level_sounds_mymapname or weapon_sounds_mymapname.

{
"precache_file"		"scripts/game_sounds_mymapname.txt"
"precache_file"		"scripts/weapon_sounds_mymapname.txt"
}
</pre>

Now to actually precache the soundscript when you start your map, you have to add this key to your maps mapadd script:

<pre>
"SoundCache"
{
"Base_mymapname"	        "1"
}
</pre>

Note: once you add the "SoundCache" key to your mapaddscript, you have to specify ALL soundscripts the map needs, even the default ones, heres an example of what the script has to look like then:

<pre>"mymapname"
{
"spawnitems"
{
"weapon_smg1" "1"
"item_ammo_smg1" "2"
}
"SoundCache"
{
